2025 Betty Endicott Student Scholarship Recipients

The Betty Endicott Scholarship is given annually from the NATAS-NCCB Chapter to full-time undergraduate or graduate students studying for a career in communications and/or broadcast journalism.


This year Emily Condon of the University of Maryland, Kayla Farris of Howard University, and Jane Fusco from American University have each earned $2,000 to be used towards their education. All three are standouts among the almost two dozen scholarship applicants.


All three recipients will be honored at the 67th Emmy Awards on June 21, 2025.  


Emily Condon is a recent graduate from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. This May she will receive her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. At the University, Ms. Condon has been an Undergraduate representative for dean search, served on the selection committee for the Merrill Hall of Fame and a member of the college assembly including the provost’s student and appointments committees. She has also worked at the Capital News Service, interned at WBFF in Baltimore, as well as CNN and NBC News. She is currently working at the Washington Post as an audience strategy intern. 


Kayla Farris is a recent graduate from Howard University’s Cathy Hughs School of Communication and will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Media, Journalism, and Film this May. Most of Ms. Farris’ reporter stories were broadcast on WHUT, a PBS affiliate in Washington, DC which broadcasts to more than 2.5 million viewers. She has also interned in both local and network news stations including NBC/WRC4 and CBS News and serves in leadership positions with the Howard University Student Association (HUSA), which represents the university’s diverse student population of more than 12,000.


Jane Fusco is a recent graduate from American University’s School of Communications and will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism this May. Ms. Fusco is the recipient of numerous Awards and Honors including the Streitmatter Prizes from the American University’s School of Communications, the American News Women’s Club Annual Scholarship, and the Capital Speakers Club Annual Scholarship. Ms. Fusco currently serves as the News Director, Executive Producer, Anchor, and Reporter at ATV NEWS at American University and has interned at CNN and ABC News in addition to local NBC and ABC affiliates in Wilmington, NC, and Charleston, SC, respectively.


“We’re proud to provide these scholarships to budding communications and broadcast journalism professionals,” said Chapter President, Adam Longo. “Emily, Kayla, and Jane are wonderful examples of the tremendous potential that is being cultivated in colleges and universities all over DC, Maryland, and Virginia. These young students are academically talented, tuned into the challenges and opportunities in our industry, and well on their way to making meaningful contributions to the work Capital Emmy Chapter members do every day,” he added.  


The regional scholarship, named in the honor of Betty Endicott, the first female news director in Washington DC, is open to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students studying for a career in communications and/or broadcast journalism. Applicants represented a wide range of schools from Howard University to American University to Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. The NATAS-NCCB chapter covers all of Virginia, Maryland, and DC, and students at any of the schools in the chapter were eligible to apply.   Read the full press release.
